Hvac Compressor Didnt Work Tech Got It Working Stopped Again

It is a big deal when the air conditioning goes out on a hot summer twenty-four hours, but there is no need to wait for help to come to yous.  Many air conditioning malfunctions are not difficult to identify and repair.  The post-obit test procedure will help you identify if the problem with your outdoor unit is the fan motor, the capacitor, or the contactor.

Condenser-Fan-Motor

Troubleshooting the "outdoor air conditioner unit not running" starts with some piece of cake commonsense steps:

  1. Make certain the thermostat is ready to absurd and the indoor unit is running (blowing air out the room air vents).
  2. Listen to the outdoor unit for the audio of the compressor running.
  3. If you hear the compressor running go to "department A" below. Note, compressors can run quietly.
  4. If y'all cannot hear the compressor running go to "section B" below.

Section A; you lot tin hear the a/c compressor running and the fan motor is not turning.

Considering the compressor is running you know in that location is 220 volts ability to the outdoor unit and you know the contactor is doing its job of delivering that 220 volts to the compressor and to the motor.  The malfunction will be a bad capacitor and/or a bad motor. Capacitors can be tested with multi-meters that have the ability to read microfarads or yous can take your capacitor (and your motor) to your nearest U-FIX-IT store for a free bench examination.  If the capacitor tests expert so your motor is bad.

Circumspection – Capacitors can store an electric charge (similar a battery).  The stupor hazard is not-lethal, simply information technology is no fun.   Check the 220 volt power is off and discharge the capacitor by shorting between capacitor terminals (with insulated screwdriver) before removing the wires from the terminals.

Interesting facts

  1. A capacitor continued to both the compressor and the motor tin fail on just the motor side.
  2. Bad a/c fan motors tin sometimes be started by "spinning" the fan blade with a stick – it is nevertheless a bad motor.

Contactor

Section B; y'all cannot hear the a/c compressor running and the fan motor is not turning.  Your side by side troubleshooting stride will exist checking the 220 volt power because information technology is highly unlikely both the compressor and the fan motor would fail at the aforementioned time.  Failure of the contactor (see pic above) most often produces this symptom.  You can prove the contactor is the trouble by using a multi-meter or you can accept your contactor to your nearest U-Ready-IT store for a free bench examination.

Testing the contactor on air conditioner outdoor unit of measurement

  1. Using a multi-meter, verify at that place is 220 volts going into the contactor, but zilch volts coming out of the contactor (to the motor and compressor). If you lot  you have 220 volts coming out (contactor is expert) then check the capacitor or bring it in to U-Ready-It for a free demote cheque.
  2. Check for 24 volts beyond the coil terminals. If no 24 volts call U-FIX-Information technology for aid.
  3. Contactor is bad if multi-meter reads 220 volts going in, zero volts coming out, and 24 volts across the scroll terminals.

Caution: use care when measuring live voltages not to bear upon bare connections or short them to the cabinet or to other terminals with the meter probes.
